What is Udyam Registration?

Last updated: 27 June 2026

Udyam Registration is the official government process by which a Micro, Small, or Medium Enterprise (MSME) registers itself on the Ministry of MSME's portal (udyamregistration.gov.in) to obtain a Udyam Registration Certificate — the recognised proof of MSME status that unlocks priority-sector lending, government scheme benefits, and the 45-day payment protection under the MSMED Act.

The registration is free, entirely online, based on self-declaration, and auto-verified against PAN and GST databases — no inspector visit, no physical documents.

MSME classification limits (from 1 April 2025)

Category Investment (plant & machinery) Annual turnover
Micro ≤ ₹2.5 crore ≤ ₹10 crore
Small ≤ ₹25 crore ≤ ₹100 crore
Medium ≤ ₹125 crore ≤ ₹500 crore

Both investment and turnover criteria must be met; exports are excluded from turnover. These limits were raised substantially from 1 April 2025 under Union Budget 2025 — many businesses that previously did not qualify are now eligible.

Fact box. Only businesses registered on the Udyam portal are protected by the 45-day payment rule under MSMED Act Section 15 and the Section 43B(h) income-tax disallowance on late payments. An unregistered MSME — however small — gets none of these protections.

Who needs Udyam Registration?

Any Micro, Small, or Medium enterprise that wants to:

  • Access government schemes (credit guarantee, subsidies, tenders reserved for MSMEs)
  • Get priority-sector bank loans at concessional rates
  • Enforce the 45-day payment rule against large buyers
  • Protect buyers' tax deduction rights under Section 43B(h)

Udyam Assist Platform (UAP)

For Informal Micro Enterprises that are below the GST registration threshold and cannot use the main Udyam portal, the Udyam Assist Platform provides an equivalent registration through designated banks and NBFCs. The Udyam Assist Certificate is treated as equivalent to Udyam Registration for MSMED Act and priority-sector lending purposes.

Frequently asked questions

Is Udyam Registration mandatory? It is not universally mandatory, but it is a prerequisite for almost all MSME benefits. A business cannot enforce the 45-day payment rule or claim Section 43B(h) protection without a valid Udyam certificate.

Can traders register on Udyam? Yes, traders can obtain Udyam registration. However, a crucial point: the Section 43B(h) income-tax disallowance applies only to manufacturing and service MSMEs — a buyer paying a Udyam-registered trader late does not face tax disallowance. Only manufacturers and service providers are protected.
